Huiqi studied Korean at Yanbian University. When the public-sponsored study abroad exchange program was notified, she chose the latter between Kyung Hee University and Kim Il Sung University, one is Western Korea and the other is mysterious North Korea. . In her view, South Korea can go anytime, and to learn more about North Korea, she may only have this chance in her life.

Image△Colorful houses on the streets of North Korea.

In April last year, she flew to North Korea and looked down at North Korea from the plane. Her eyes were full of colorful small houses. North Korean citizens would spontaneously paint the walls once every season to change the color of the walls. "The architecture of North Korea reminds me of Nordic countries," said an uncle doing business on the plane to Hui Qi.

The colorful buildings gradually showed their outlines, and the details slowly became clear. Finally, with the noise of the aircraft rubbing against the ground, the 193-day countdown began, and the magical North Korea was right in front of you.

The following is Hui Qi's narrative.

△School environment.

The school I exchanged is Kim Il Sung University in Pyongyang, the capital. It is the highest institution in North Korea. The former leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Il, studied here. The school is very large. When you enter the door is a statue of Kim Il Sung. The greenery of the campus is very good. You can often encounter small squirrels and birds on the road, which makes people feel like a large manor.

The school has an electronic library and an old library of paper books, which are connected together. Among them, the electronic library is designed by a North Korean designer. It can be connected to the Internet, using the internal network of North Korea, and the computer is a Win7 system. The swimming pool facilities are national, with international standard swimming lanes and diving platforms.

Image△ The slogan on the campus uses a revolutionary offensive to make every effort to build a powerful socialist country.

The stone on the campus is engraved with a slogan "Learning is fighting", and on the top of the teaching building is a row of red letters "Great Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il will always be with you", this typography will light up at night, the leader's name It will also be enlarged specifically, and we can see this typography from the dormitory.

Local students in North Korea must wear a badge with the leader's portrait on it. All adult women are required to wear skirts that must be knee-length, and almost every street will be checked. If you enter the campus from the front entrance, you need to bow to the statue of Kim Il Sung, but we often take shortcuts to the teaching building and we have never done such a thing.

International students attend classes in a separate teaching building, not with students from North Korea. On the road, local students would not talk to us, let alone fall in love with foreign students. I heard that a North Korean had fallen in love with an international student. Later that student was expelled from the Jinda dormitory.

Jinda has no clubs, and spends most of the time studying. We learn several courses in school, such as lectures, conversation, grammar, geography, writing, etc. We have classes in the morning from Monday to Saturday, and we spend the rest of the time for homework or rest. As the highest institution of higher learning, some of the teachers of Jinda University have been abroad, and their thinking will be relatively open.

North Korean students and publicly funded international students study at Jinda University for free, and the government provides the best accommodation and educational resources. The school treats publicly-sponsored international students very preferentially. We have a US$500 scholarship provided by the government, of which US$250 is subsidies for accommodation and meals. The three meals in the canteen often change the dishes, usually there are four dishes and one soup, and I have eaten seven or eight catties. If we are tired of eating in the cafeteria, we will go out to find a place to eat, burgers, spicy hot pots, barbecues, hot pots, hot pots are still Beijing copper pots.

△The bed in the dormitory.

The dormitory is a bit like a hotel. Everyone has a single bed. The living area on the third floor is equipped with kitchenware, oven, microwave, etc., as well as a TV. You can watch some domestic TV series. We can’t access North Korea’s intranet. We need to buy an expensive phone card that can access the Internet. It costs US$200 to get one, or go to the Chinese Embassy in North Korea to check the Internet, but we can only use a small number of apps, so most of the time we Less use of the Internet.

I remember that the air conditioner in the dormitory broke down one day, and I was too hot to sleep. I talked to my sister in the supermarket downstairs, and the school immediately sent someone to fix the air conditioner.

△ Dormitory building.

The school has a dormant system, and the school will select some North Korean students with roots as our school companions. Most of them are children of wealthy families or children of officials with excellent grades. They are excellent students of Kim Il Sung University. They are on different floors of the same dormitory with the international students, and they are responsible for helping our study and life, and they also have a monitoring role. Every once in a while, there will be a group of fellow students. After the change, the fellow students cannot contact us again because they are in danger of being convicted of treason.

Except for the students at the same boarding house, we also cannot get in touch with other local students from North Korea. Classmates come to the dormitory every day and ask us where we have been and what we have done. In some serious cases, they will even look at your mobile phone or delete your photos.

△European and American students and fellow students.

In the school, there are also some international students from France, Sweden, Australia, Vietnam, Laos and other countries. My front desk is a male student from Sweden. He is the first person from Sweden to study in North Korea. He had studied Korean in Sweden, had traveled here, and later decided to study abroad. On the first day of school, he was dressed very formally, wearing a suit and a badge. We asked him why he was dressed so exaggeratedly. He said that the student in the same board told him to dress like this.

My roommate sister Yin Zhen (pseudonym) is quite special. She grew up in Beijing and went back to North Korea for university after graduating from high school. She could have chosen to stay in Beijing, but she still wanted to return to her own country and make some contributions to the country, probably because of their patriotic education.

Once, the school organized us to visit the Jinxiu Mountain Sun Palace, which is the tomb of the late leaders of North Korea, Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. When we entered the mourning hall, the light was dark red. In the mourning hall, "Song of General Kim Il Sung" and "Song of General Kim Jong Il" were displayed. Bowing in all directions, the North Koreans who went to visit felt that the moment was supremely glorious and would cry with excitement. Their respect for leaders is beyond imagination.

North Korea also has its own band, but most of North Korea's pop music themes are praises to the motherland, and there is almost no personal emotions. In private, I will popularize folk songs and rock music to students. North Koreans are not allowed to listen to Korean songs, but I will play Korean band songs in my dormitory. When the students come to my room to find me, they have no choice but to hear them. They will say, "Korean music is just like this, it has no meaning."

Occasionally I would chat with my sister in the same room and talk about the topic of love. I said that you are so good and so many people are chasing you. Why not fall in love? She said, "Since the Chinese male star Zeng Xiaoxian has derailed, he has never believed in love anymore." I found out that everyone has emotional troubles and anxiety about exams. In fact, everyone is the same in these aspects.

Before we left, I left some items as gifts for the sisters of the same boarding students. They accepted them and said thank you. On the day of the flight, a roommate came to me and said, "You are the squad leader, give you the gift for you." I was very moved at the time. The package was very tightly wrapped, and it was wrapped in several layers with tape. After opening it, I found that it was the present we gave them. Although we are usually called sisters and sisters, they may also want to get along with us, but because they have a "task" in their bodies, they cannot treat foreigners as good friends.

Pyongyang’s subway card only needs 5,000 dynasties (equivalent to RMB 5) and can take 120 trips. I often go out to school to play. Except for military areas, international students holding student IDs can move around freely in Pyongyang, but they are occasionally checked for student IDs. There are nightclubs in Pyongyang. Like our old disco, there are dazzling lights and some English songs. Only foreigners can go. Everyone gathers in a larger room and dances together.

Triumph Youth Park, there are jumping machines and roller coasters. We also go shooting together, playing bowling, karaoke, and playing billiards. I fell in love with playing billiards in North Korea. The billiards hall is in the Korea Hotel. There are aunts in the billiards hall. They wear skirts covering the hips to teach you to play billiards. For the first time, I thought that playing billiards can be so elegant.

△The street where Huiqi often walks.

I usually like to walk. I remember once walking out of the store next to the university. The sky was particularly blue, the street was very clean, and the trees on both sides were tall and straight, very green, as if walking in Xin Haicheng’s anime. The street is closed to traffic and very clean, because the remains of Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung passed by that road. Once, I walked towards the Sun Palace in Jinxiu Mountain. I was very excited while listening to the music. I was suddenly stopped by a military assistant on the street. He had a gun on his body. I was so scared that I was sorry that I just took a walk. He told the captain and didn't embarrass me anymore. That time I should have gone beyond the prescribed range for walking and reached the restricted area.

I also take a walk to the Qinggao to buy things, a place similar to a convenience store, that place is amazing, and I can find out everything I want. Once I went to buy flour, but there was no flour in the store. After a call from the store, an old grandma came over with flour on her back. On another occasion, I saw a place on the streets of Pyongyang that read "Information and Technology Exchange Center" outside the door. After entering it boldly, I found that it was selling clothes and perfume.

The main currencies circulating in the North Korean market include the Korean currency, the U.S. dollar, the renminbi, and the Euro. The Korean currency is used in small convenience stores, and the U.S. dollar and renminbi are used in restaurants and clothing stores. If we go out with Korean currency, we have to bring at least 100,000 yuan, with a huge amount of money in our pocket, and feel so rich. Local goods are cheaper, but imported goods are more expensive, such as a can of Coke at US$2. I didn't see a bank in North Korea, and I usually exchanged Korean currency at the supermarket sister in the dormitory.

Image
△Cangtian Avenue.

The daily life of Pyongyang people is also very lively. Family members will go out on a picnic together. They will use a small stereo, put food on the floor, and then start dancing and singing. I think they are quite happy. Most people in Pyongyang have mobile phones. The wealthy even have several mobile phones. Some people use Apple’s latest mobile phones, as well as Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO and some Korean brands of mobile phones. Most of them use them to make calls and watch movies. I have also seen someone playing a mobile game similar to "Ski Adventure" in the subway.

Image
△The sports field at the foot of Mudan Peak.

I ran into many children on the road. They would pull out weeds when they were on the way after school. There are no rules. They do it consciously. The streets of Pyongyang are very clean, and no one throws rubbish on the grass.

△Children by the street.

Some residents of North Korea have some inherent prejudice against foreigners. They will go a little bit farther when they see foreigners, and some parents will also let them stay away from us when they see their children. But some children will say "Hello" and "I love you" in Chinese when they meet us.

Once, my roommate and I came out from the door of the dormitory. That evening, I saw many people in military uniforms. I was not sure if it was a soldier because many people in North Korea would perform military service. They lined up in a long line and passed by the dormitory holding the North Korean flag. They saw us and said "hello, hello" to us. I couldn't even see their faces because it was getting dark, but I still remember We are very moved by the voice and the flag.

△ Yao Ming at the scene of a friendly basketball match between China and North Korea.

You can see Chinese programs on North Korean TV. One time when we were eating in a restaurant, Li Yifeng was singing on the TV. I thought it was too cordial. The North Koreans are also particularly fascinated by the Chinese TV series "Red Sorghum" and "Gynecologist", perhaps because their local TV series are relatively boring. They are all about rural youth building their hometowns, and they are more fond of them. Chinese celebrities are also very popular in North Korea. Once my teacher asked me in class if Zhou Xun had plastic surgery. The waiter sister in the supermarket asked me if Tong Liya was married. During the friendly basketball match between China and North Korea, the Chinese Embassy in North Korea invited us to watch the match. Yao Ming also went to the scene.

North Koreans can only rely on official newspapers or radio to get news every day. On June 12, 2018, Trump and Kim Jong-un met for the first time in Singapore. We can already see the news on the Internet, and they will come and ask us. Teachers have also asked me about the cost of air tickets to Beijing. In fact, they are eager to learn about the outside world.

Image

I remember that during the summer vacation, a delegation from Peking University came over. The uncle in the delegation said: "When I came to North Korea a few years ago, I felt that they were very happy. You might think that they should not live well under this system. , But found that everyone’s face is full of happiness. This time, they seem to be more numb. "I think it’s right. North Korea’s economy is opening up and external information is increasing, but the mind is still Has been kept under control.

△The newspaper on the 70th anniversary of the founding of North Korea.

On September 9, 2018, North Korea held the 70th anniversary celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. We watched a live performance at the May 1st Stadium in Pyongyang. We were lucky to be invited to the rostrum. When Kim Jong-un came out, the people in the entire square were shouting long live. The parade of 100,000 people, some pushing statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, some waving flags, and some holding objects with modern technology, they all walked leaping steps, looking very shocked.

It is not possible to take photos at the celebration. We went through two security checks and all the electronic equipment was confiscated, so no photos were taken. I went to the stamp memorial to buy a limited edition stamp for the 70th anniversary of the founding of North Korea and also collected a copy of the day of the military parade. Newspaper.

△ Huiqi is at Mount King Kong.

You can’t go out alone in areas outside of Pyongyang. Our class has organized a group trip to Mount Kumgang, Donghae and other scenic spots. Together with our classmates, we saw many uninhabited scenery.

△Students go on a trip together.

Although we complained when we were in North Korea, after we left, my classmates and I often missed the life there. Because of the inconvenience of the Internet in North Korea, my friends and I have returned to the most traditional way of getting along with each other day and night, without using WeChat, and seldom even making phone calls. I'll knock on your door, then go in and sit down, or verbally make an appointment to go out at a certain time. We will sing and play the guitar on the balcony, and we will also go for a walk and chat together to dissolve our current negative energy through chat. The seven months of getting along with classmates is worth the four years in China. Such an environment allows us to settle down and get to know each other, and it also gives me more time to think, instead of facing the outside world all day long. A lot of information coming.

I always think of a sentence, "She is still too young to know that the memories will always erase the bad and exaggerate the good. It is also because of this mystery that we can bear the burden of the past." After returning, look. When I drank a kind of soy milk there, or when I walked to a quiet street and saw similar trees, I would think of those scenes in North Korea and that period of time.
