 North Korea’s claim of being a utopian society is the source of much ridicule in the outside world, but it’s a notion that remain widely believed and accepted within North Korea itself. The same held true for a 17-year-old North Korean girl until she began having serious doubts about the idea after watching a Chinese television broadcast in secret one day. She made the decision to cross over into China, driven by her curiosity to discover the truth about the outside world. In the years following her defection, she has been working to raise global awareness on the grim reality within North Korea through various means, having authored a book, producing a documentary, and participating in numerous speaking engagements.

 In this week’s edition of the Globalists, we sit down with North Korean defector Lee Hyeonseo, who wrote the book “The Girl with Seven Names” and served as the executive producer of the documentary film “Beyond Utopia.” Join us as we learn more about Hyeonseo’s harrowing defection from North Korea and why she has become one of the most influential voices in the world.
