Two Korean-Americans are included in the list of “150 women who shake the world” that American weekly news magazine Newsweek has published in commemoration of the 100th International Women’s Day on Tuesday.

The two are Dr. Kim Pil-ju, the president of Agglove Services International, as “the woman who offered the world’s hungriest regions with food” and Michelle Rhee, who has “challenged lawmakers to fix the education system -- not just argue about it.”

The magazine mistakenly categorized Kim as being from North Korea apparently because she has worked so much for the North.

She has worked with major seed companies and has been to North Korea over 60 times and has brought with her millions of dollars worth of farming knowledge, technology, and supplies to several cooperative farms. She is widely known as "Cotton Grandma."

Born in North Korea before the country was divided, and raised in South Korea, Kim studied agriculture at Seoul National University and later received her doctorate from Cornell University.

She secured one of the first contracts with the North Korean government to work with several dozen cooperative farms on developing their agriculture, including helping them to identify export markets to generate income.

Educator Rhee, 41, is the daughter of Korean immigrants and was born and raised in the United States.

She is the former chancellor of the District of Columbia Public Schools System in Washington, D.C. She has founded the New Teacher Project (TNTP) in 1997 and has successfully recruited 10,000 teachers in 20 states in just 10 years.

The founder and CEO of StudentsFirst, a political advocacy organization which works on education reform issues, Rhee has dedicated her life to actively reforming the education system in the U.S.

Unfortunately, there are no Korean nationals in the list.

미 시사주간지 뉴스위크가 8일 제100회 '세계 여성의 날'을 맞아 '세계를 뒤흔드는 여성 150명'을 선정했다. 김 박사를 '세계에서 가장 배고픈 지역에 음식을 선물하는 여성'이라고 소개했고, 한국계인 미셸 리에 대해선 '말로만 떠들던 정치인들이 공교육을 정말 뜯어고치게 만들었다'고 평했다.

그녀는 주요 종자회사에서 근무한 경력이 있으며 60회 이상 남한과 북한을 오가며 수백만 달러의 가치가 있는 농업지식, 기술, 그리고 물자들을 협동 농장으로 전달했다. 김박사는 별명 "목화 할머니"로 잘 알려져 있다.

한국이 분단되기 전, 북한에서 태어나 한국에서 자란 김 박사는 서울 대학교에서 동업과를 졸업했으며 코넬 대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다.

또한, 그녀는 최초로 북한 정부와 계약을 체결하여 수십 개의 협동 농장에서 농업 개발에 힘을 썼으며 소득을 생성하기 위해 수출 시장을 식별 할 수 있도록 도왔다.

미셸 리씨(41)는 한국 이민자들의 딸로 미국에서 태어나고 자랐다.

그녀는 전직 미국 워싱턴 디씨 컬럼비아 공립 학교 시스템 장관이며 1997년 도에는 “새 교사 프로젝트”를 성공적으로 설립하여 10년만에 20개 의 주에서 만명의 교사를 배출했다.

StudentsFirst라는 교육 개혁 옹호 정치 단체의 설립자로써 그녀는 미국의 교육제도를 개혁하는 데에 헌신하고 있다.

명단에는 힐러리 클린턴 미 국무장관, 매들린 올브라이트 전 미 국무장관, 낸시 펠로시 민주당 하원 원내대표, 콘돌리자 라이스 전 미 국무장관 등 미국 정치계의 '파워 우먼'이 대거 포함됐다.

150명 중엔 미국인이 67명에 이른다. 재미교포인데도 뉴스위크가 북한 국적으로 잘못 표기한 김필주 박사를 제외하고, 한국 국적의 여성은 포함되지 않았다.
