Figuring out how to engage North Korea in a meaningful way is a challenge, but a group at Cambridge is hosting a meeting in December to think about it. The notice is posted in full below. If there was ever a place where new ideas are needed, North Korea is certainly it.



How Can the Academic and Professional Communities Engage North Korea?

Engage Korea 2015 will take place at the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Cambridge on Saturday, December 12, 2015 from 9:00 to 18:00. Engage Korea is a student-driven humanitarian and educational initiative on the DPRK that strives to be impartial, constructive and informative. Its vision is to cultivate a global network of students, junior scholars and practitioners who are well-informed, thereby creating a sustained effort for peace-building on the Korean Peninsula. To support this vision, the organisation has previously held Engage Korea 2013 at Oxford University, provided educational support for the 2014 Student Conference on the DPRK at Harvard University, and administered an online short course on DPRK healthcare in the summer of 2015.

Engage Korea 2015 will provide a space where academics and professionals can participate in meaningful dialogue about ways to improve the lives of the North Korean people and will feature thematic panels on Tumen Triangle development, health and culture/education.

Select speakers will include (in alphabetical order):

• Anastasia Konyakhina, Research Associate, Russian Academy of Sciences, Far Eastern Branch
• June Hee Kwon, Associate Professor of Anthropology at New York University
• Colin McCulloch, Professor of Management and Economics at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology
• Kee Park, External Engagement Fellow at the Korean American Medical Association
• Morten Traavik, Norwegian Director and Artist with experience in North Korean cultural engagement

Plus representatives from DULA International, the organisation that arranged the North Korean Youth Para-Ensemble Concert Tour 2015

In addition, junior scholars will present academic papers during discussion sessions, and there will be a screening of the 2012 documentary, YES, WE LOVE THIS COUNTRY!

Engage Korea 2015 is supported by the Academy of Korean Studies and the British Korea Society.

New ideas? It's the same tired ideas repackaged as new. Where is the evidence that any of the discussions generated at the previous two conferences have led to meaningful change in North Korea? Also, there were rumblings that the organizers of this conference would not allow North Korean defectors to take part. Is this true?
